Traffic on part of the 7,000km long Trans-Siberian Railway washalted after the collapse. An inquiry has been launched to determine what caused the bridgeto fall. News of the Russian bridge collapse has come just months after thecollapse of the Polcevera viaduct in Italy, more familiarly known as theMorandi bridge, killing 43 people. Investigators examining the scene of the collapsed Italian bridgein August founddamage tothe main stay cables on the collapsed section of the bridge and suggested afailure of the cables may have been behind the collapse. Tender documents seen by NewCivil Engineeralso revealedthat the sectionof the viaduct that collapsed was due for significant repairs along with theadjacent tower and stay cables. 2. Highways England unveils revised Lower ThamesCrossing plan Highways England has unveiled revisedplans to construct a road tunnel connecting Kent and Essex and almost doubleroad capacity across the river Thames. The revised plans includes measures suchas extending the tunnel so the entrance in Kent is 600m further south. Parts of the new road will also belowered by five to six metres in an attempt to reduce its visual impact. The multi-billion-pound Lower ThamesCrossing project will create a new, three-lane dual carriageway connecting theM2 near Rochester in Kent with the M25 in Essex between North and SouthOckenden. The extra capacity will mean thatnorthbound journey times at the Dartford Crossing would almost halve after thenew road opens, the roads body claims. Highways England has also said the 23kmroute connecting Gravesham in Kent and Thurrock in Essex will cut traffic usingthe Dartford crossings by 22% with 14M vehicles using it every year. |
